The part cooling fan has its work cut out for it. It has to work in close proximity to the heater block while maintaining sufficient air flow, let alone provide low enough air temperatures needed to cool the filament as it is extruded.
To help minimize the heat from building up in the fan housing, a thermal reflective barrier is applied to the back side of the fan housing. This reflects up to 80% of the radiant heat that is produced by the heater block.
